Frequently Asked Questions
Because every website is different, your level of ADA / WCAG compliance on your Wix website will vary.
When building your website, Wix does provide about 40 accessibility templates that will offer a solid foundation, addressing many of the back-end accessibility features your site will need. Examples include things like visual indicators, ARIA attributes, and keyboard semantics. But whether you’re building or updating your site, Wix has also created an accessibility checklist(opens in a new tab) to ensure that once you’ve added or updated your custom content, you’re meeting universally accepted accessibility requirements.
However, it’s important to remember that when you customize your site, introducing personalized elements, images, and content, you’re likely also introducing new accessibility errors. Once your website is complete or you’ve added new content, it’s always a good idea to test that content to ensure it’s accessible.
We’ve made it easy to evaluate your Wix website’s ADA compliance. Simply visit accessibilitytest.org(opens in a new tab) and plug in your URL. We scan your website, giving you a 0-100 accessibility score. And we aggregate some of the more comprehensive web testing tools so you’re seeing your score not only from AudioEye, but also from other popular tools including Wave, axe, and HTML_CodeSniffer.
Because of the dynamic nature of website content, your accessibility score will never reach or remain at 100, but this comprehensive tool will give you an idea of your overall accessibility level and specific errors.
You can also use your computer’s built-in features like VoiceOver(opens in a new tab) on your Mac or iPhone. VoiceOver is similar to a screen reader assistive technology. If you enable the feature and listen to the way in which your website is “read” to you, it will quickly indicate whether you have accessibility errors. You can then fix the most common errors instantly when you install AudioEye.
The reality is, legal requirements can be confusing white when it comes to your Wix website accessibility. Confusing because the Americans with Disabilities Act(opens in a new tab) (ADA) does not specifically mention website accessibility. Title III of the ADA does require accessibility for “places of public accommodations,” and by the thousands, plaintiffs are suing businesses and organizations for inaccessible online content, claiming a website is a place of public accommodation. Since the requirements are ambiguous, it’s up to courts to decide, and overwhelmingly, U.S. Federal Courts are ruling in favor of online access. This means if your Wix website is not accessible and ADA compliant, you’re at risk of an ADA-related accessibility lawsuit. One that can cost you valuable time and money, not to mention potentially position your brand negatively as one that does not value online equality.
According to Wix, its sites are optimized for the most common screen reading technologies(opens in a new tab), including NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA), Voiceover–the built-in reader on the Mac, and Talkback–the built-in reader for android. However, in order for these types of assistive technologies to accurately communicate the information on your website to the user, it’s best practice to do things such as setting your website’s language, making sure your images have descriptive alternative text, and organizing your website’s structure.
An ADA compliant Wix website is essentially one that is designed for users of all abilities to freely navigate. This includes resolving any accessibility barriers for the one billion people worldwide who are living with a disability(opens in a new tab). This means website designers, developers and owners should take every consideration to ensure there are no barriers to accessing content for any user. Even one barrier for one user can put that business or organization at risk of a costly ADA-related lawsuit.
Importantly, if you’re making every effort to resolve your accessibility errors, and have a sustainable plan to show compliance, you’ll greatly reduce your risk of legal action. This is where AudioEye is a trusted partner. Once installed, we certify your Wix website ADA compliance, monitoring and scanning your website every time you have a visitor interacting with it, leveraging a combination of our AI automation and human expertise to fix errors users may encounter.
