INTRODUCTION

The digital world is evolving — but accessibility is falling behind.

Companies today have access to previously unimaginable amounts of user data. Advances in automation and generative AI are helping drive efficiency and deliver smarter, more personalized customer experiences.

We’re in an era where every user interaction should be tailored to that individual’s needs and expectations. Yet, for the 1.3 billion people globally with a disability, digital accessibility barriers can make it hard to fully use or enjoy websites and other digital content.

To help illustrate the depth of the problem, we scanned over 400,000 web pages across 15,000 websites and found that the average page has 297 accessibility issues that can be detected by automation alone. These issues range in severity, from smaller violations that slow users down to outright barriers that can stop them in their tracks, like buttons that can’t be triggered by keyboard-only users or input fields that aren’t properly labeled for non-sighted users.

Highlights

  • Our scan revealed that the average web page has 297 accessibility violations that can be detected by automation.

  • Laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act and European Accessibility Act have established clear requirements for web accessibility — backed by strict penalties for non-compliance.

  • Understanding common accessibility barriers by industry helps companies prioritize which areas of their site to test first.

In recent years, the number of website accessibility lawsuits has steadily risen, and high severity issues are often the ones that lead to companies being sued — and losing in court.

Simply put: Every company should have a clear, proactive plan for accessibility compliance. Laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and European Accessibility Act (EAA) have clear technical requirements for compliance — and deadlines are fast approaching.
